Description:
Translation and analysis of two songs. A "Sōbānepada – Hasepadaa" song that was performed at a recording session titled "Event 07: Women's songs - Bailhongal" during the Bake Restudy Project in 1984, when Nazir Ali Jairazbhoy and Amy Catlin-Jairazbhoy returned to the original sites of Arnold Adriaan Bake’s 1938 fieldwork in South India (Tamilnadu, Kerala, and Karnataka) in order to solicit responses to Bake’s photographs and audio recordings of various Indian performance traditions in an examination of continuity and change. After this song was was performed, a song recorded by in 1938 by Bake, number 68.8 "Homecoming of the bride," was played back to the performers. Transcription by Sarvamangala Honnappa; translation and analysis by S.A. Krishnaiah, with the coooperation of Dr. C.V. Navalagi-Gokaka and Dr. R.K.Marathe.

Description:
Transcription of a song recorded by Arnold Adriaan Bake in 1938: archive, no. 68.6, titled "Lullaby." S. A. Krishnaiah, who translated the song, identifies it as a "Cradling Ceremony (naming ceremony) song." This song was played back during a recording session titled "Event 07: Women's songs - Bailhongal." The recording was created during the Bake Restudy Project in 1984 when Nazir Ali Jairazbhoy and Amy Catlin-Jairazbhoy returned to the original sites of Arnold Adriaan Bake’s 1938 fieldwork in South India (Tamilnadu, Kerala, and Karnataka) in order to solicit responses to Bake’s photographs and audio recordings of various Indian performance traditions in an examination of continuity and change. Description:

Event 05: Women's songs - Vaḍgaon

Description:
This Event was attended by about 30 women at the home of Mr. Bhondre. Most of A. A. Bake's 1938 Belgaum recordings are in Kannada; the people at this Event were Marathi speakers and did not recognize much. Some Kannada speaking women were invited and one, Malavva Shahpurkar, seemed to recognize the Kannada songs, but was reluctant to sing. Late in the session after the PCM recorder had been dismantled, it was learned that the women apparently specialized in bhajan; bhajans were not recorded. 1. Marriage song. The soloist is Malavva Shahpurkar. Other women respond in unison singing "so" at the end of each solo line. A haldi ceremony song, sung by a bride to her husband, about how the husband should not abuse the bride's parents, so she must behave well. Naik community. 2. Shivaji sapana (lullaby), sung by four to five women, probably sung in Marathi. This song mentions Shiva. A haldi song. Sung in response to the playback of 1938 A. A. Bake recording, Bake 69.8 "Maratha lullaby." 3. Hadaga (1). Sung in Marathi. This song mentions Krishna. The women said it was sung by lower castes. 4. Hadaga (2). Sung in Marathi. 5. Hadaga (3). Sung in Marathi. Eight voices. 6. Hadaga (4). There is a solo singer with others joining. The song mentions a mother-in-law, "Saasur," and Krishna. Sung in Marathi. Single voice.

Event 05: Women's songs - Vaḍgaon

Event 08: Gīgīpada - Bailhongal

Description:
Gīgīpada is a form heard at festivals and for entertainment at happy, auspicious occasions. Songs that were recorded on video during this event were performed by Gīgīpada singers of the Holeya community who sing mystical songs, auspicious songs, and modern songs on sanitation and cleanliness of body and mind. The performers are: Ramachandra Ramappa Dhavale (of Tigadi Galli, voice and daf), Yerappa Basavappa Sutagaji (of Kalma Galli, voice and taal or jhāñjh cymbals); and Basappa Gagappa Talwar (Talwar Galli, voice and tuṇtuṇe). <br/><br/>1. Gīgīpada (Gīgī Pada): "Sharanam sharanambe Bhavani" Take Refuge in the Goddess." Composer: Hulkund Pasappa, who was active in 1955. <br/><br/>2. Gīgīpada (Gīgī Pada): "Sovvesuvanari sudanayanada bisane vabhavalla." This song invokes Bhavani, the Goddess, in Kannada language. A mystical song sung at festivals. Composer: Purandaradāsa (Purandara Dasa) (1484-1564), a Haridasa philosopher, composer, singer and one of the founders of Carnatic music.

Event 03: Women's songs - Kanbargi

Description:
Six Dalit Kannada-speaking women sing 5 songs during a playback session of Bake 1938 recordings. 1. Narrative grinding song (?) about the origins of the Malaprabhā River. Malavva (a lady who is grinding) is helped by Mallikarjun (Shiva). Similar to the 1938 A. A. Bake recording, Bake 68.5 "Grinding song," but the tune is different. Language Haḷegannaḍa (old Kannada). Refrain: "sovanavai." Recorded only "half" of the song. Singers: Fakirva Kalappa Desnur and one other woman. During Event 07: Women's songs - Bailhongal, after hearing the Bake 69.12 "Kanarese song about girls coming of age" the performers sang the grinding song "Bangārala." 2. Purnima Festival Song. Two Singers: Shivakka Basappa Kolkar, Gangubai Yashwant Kolkar. Sung in response to Bake 69.11 "Harvest song." Language: Kannada. 3. Marriage, entering the wedding pandal. Singer: Gangubai Yashwant Kolkar. Title/First line: "Sumankeri subadind." Community: Dalit / Naik (?). Sung in response to Bake 69.12 "Kanarese song about girls coming of age." Language: Kannada. Dalit (Naik?) community. 4. Ha Dadattai munde, by Hulkund Bhima. Reform movement on women's behavior. Singer: Kedar Megho Birje (male). Language: Marathi, with explanation given in Hindi. 5. Jain Bhajan, devotional song. "Shukravar divsanim puja madi." Puja song. Deity: Padmavati Devi. Singer: Ratnavva Baburav Gadekar.

Event 70: Dr. Kota Shivaram Karanth, interview - Saligram

Description:
Dr. Kota Shivaram Karanth was interviewed by Nazir Ali Jairazbhoy over two days at the Karanth home in Saligrama village, Bhramavara taluk, Udupi District, Karnataka. Also present were Leela Alva Karanth, wife of Kota Shivaram Karanth, and ethnomusicologist Amy Catlin-Jairazbhoy. During the first day of the interview, recorded on audio, Nazir Ali Jairazbhoy plays back a 1938 Bake recording which Dr. Karanth identifies as a song about marriage that was sung by women while pounding rice. They also discuss Karanth's book about Yakṣagāna. A video file records the second day of the interview.

Event 70: Dr. Kota Shivaram Karanth, interview - Saligram: interview transcript

Description:
Transcript of an interview of Kota Shivaram Karanth, an Indian polymath, a novelist and playwright in the Kannada language. The author of 417 books, he was decorated with the Jnanpith Award for Kannada, the highest literary honor conferred in India. He was also an artist of the Yakshagana (Yakṣagāna) theater form, and could sing, dance and play various musical instruments. This interview is Event 70 of the Arnold Adriaan Bake Restudy Project 1984. During this interview, Karanth discusses Yakshagana, describes the meetings that he had in India with Bake, listens to pieces of music recorded by Bake in 1938 as part of his fieldwork in India, and discusses the music with ethnomusicologists Nazir Ali Jairazbhoy and Amy Catlin-Jairazbhoy. These exchanges lead to broader discussions about the music, dance and theater traditions in South India. Leela Alva Karanth, wife of Kota Shivaram Karanth, participates in the interview.

Event 13: Christian lyrics - Hubli

Description:
Holy Name Cathedral choir members, Mr. Divakar Abnes, Mrs. Chinnamma Ajagrni, Mrs. Makalamma Havalad, and Smt. Jeevubai Goni, sing songs that had been recorded by Bake in 1938. They are accompanied by the violinist, Mr. Tejappa Peter. The songs were written in a hymn lyric book, in Kannada, with the music and lyrics by the Reverend Mārā, using Indian rags and talas. The participants were brought to the session by the minister, Reverend Adina. 1. "Devaratanaya" verses 1, 2, & 5. Sung in response to Bake 65.6 "Christmas hymn." 2. "Yesure" Sung in response to the 1938 A. A. Bake recording, Bake 65.4 "Hymn no. 329." 3. "Pari ghazel" Sung in response to Bake 65.3 "Easter hymn (processional)." 4. Mother's union "Suri Saya Nina Utmava" sung in response to Bake 65.8 "Mother union hymn." 5. Ten Commandments. Sung in response to Bake 65.5 "The ten commandments." 6. Ten Commandments, stanzas 1, 3, & 5.

Event 07: Women's songs - Bailhongal (video recording)

Description:
Five Kanarese songs performed by women of the Holeya community of agricultural farmers and Yellamma cult devotees at a playback session of 1938 A. A. Bake recordings. The main instrument is voice. The performers include Basavva Bhimshappa Bharamannavar, Gangavva Shivappa Bharamannavar, ayamavva Phakirappa Bharamannavar, Bhimavva Yallappa Bharamannavar, and Phakirava Basappa Bharamannavar. The session was arranged by Chandrakanta Kusanoor, a writer, poet and painter, and Kalpana Bandiwdekar, and Kalpana Bandiwdekar, archive assistant at the Archives and Research Centre for Ethnomusicology. Chandrakanta Kusanoor interviewed the performers during the recording event.<br/><br/>1. Lullaby: four voices. <br/><br/>2. Women's songs. (08:17). Playback of of the 1938 A. A. Bake recording "Lullaby" which was performed by two women from Wadagaum. The song has been identified as a "Cradling ceremony (naming ceremony)" song (S.A. Krishnaiah). (12:16) Performance of a puberty rituals folk song. The song begins with the refrain "So o (a) ninga..." a phrase having the meaning to stay blessed (S.A. Krishnaiah). (20:53) Playback of Bake 68.7 "Adorning the bridal couple with turmeric, Kanarese wedding," performed by two women. As the women listen to Bake's recording, (23:17) Chandrakanta Kusanoor, the local scholar-guide, interrupts saying "One minute please," after which the women sing the same song exactly as heard on the tape (22:35). <br/><br/>3. Sōbānepada song (23:35) - one of the types of songs sung on the occasion of marriage - is performed (S.A. Krishnaiah). The event, in this case, is suggested by the Bake song that is played back (29:00): Bake 68.8 "Homecoming of the bride" performed by two women. <br/><br/>4. ‘Biisoo pada’ - Grinding song. Playback of Bake 68.5 "Grinding song" performed by two girls. Followed by a performance of a Grinding Song: "Bangārala." Listening to the playback (36:17), the performers respond to the music the music and begin to sing. During Event 03: Women's songs - Kanbargi, for Item 1, the performers sang a grinding song similar to Bake 68.5 "Grinding song," but with a different tune.<br/><br/> 5. (35:27) Playback of Bake 70.1 "Song for women in their seventh month" performed by women from Wadagaum. (36:18) Followed by a performance of a seventh month of pregnancy song: "Arjunanā satina galu garbhini nathalu" (Arjuna's wife is pregnant). (40:56) Then Bake 70.1 is played back, again. During the playback the looks of recognition of the song can be seen on the women's faces. The song describes the cravings experienced by the woman through the 8th month of her pregnancy. The first month, whatever she wants, a single item is fulfilled. Second Month, she has two desires. The third month, she desires thirty “muvada (moodaka) cakkulis” (a ring-shaped, fried item made of rice). The fourth month, she desires piriṭōḷigina (pēṭiyoḷagina) (prepared in the city) dvaasey (doose). The fifth Month she wants “malligi dandi” (fresh Jasmin flower woven) and desires tiniṭ'hōḷigi (‘hōḷige’), sweet pan cake. The sixth month she desires “agrada hoolige,” a sweet milk dish. The seventh month a traditionally woven saree is desired; it is her wish. The eighth month she craves sunti, (ginger), eelakki, (cardmom), and tuppa (ghee) food. The ninth month, she completes her pregnancy and gives birth to a son (S.A. Krishnaiah).
