Notes
- Description
- Reporter Dick Garten covers an outdoor press conference in which Southern California lawyer Richard Armendariz, a former Southwest political coordinator for the Democratic primary campaign of Senator Edmund S. Muskie of Maine, expresses his reasons for supporting Hubert Humphrey for president. Armendariz states that candidate George McGovern's suggested policies are out of touch with issues facing the Chicano community, especially McGovern's stance to legalize marijuana and provide amnesty for those evading the military draft in Canada – all positions Armendariz believes would only benefit white college students. Armendariz states he feels that McGovern's policies represent the politics of Welfare and that he doesn't understand the Chicano community. He further states that Humphrey's stance on programs such as Medicare, Social Security legislation, and job and head start programs would meet Chicano community needs. Armendariz also answers questions from Garten about Humphrey's qualifications and his odds running against Richard Nixon.
